Eng Karate took part in its first competition this past weekend
as the Kats entered Hanshi Diaz’s Karate Tournament of Champions
in Rego Park, NY, Sunday November 19th, 2006. It was the first tournament
for all our members and would turn out the be one of the most grueling
yet rewarding experiences of their lives.
After, registering at 11am, all the karate kats and their supporting
fans were subject to a grueling mental test as they waited 7 hours
before their actual events took place. But even with their adrenaline
wavering they found a way to shine.
Women’s Beginner (18-34 years, White, Yellow, Orange)
Rebecca Pleger was first to compete. Fighting through a lack of
experience (she has less than 30 classes under her belt), some questionable
judging and one tough yellow belt, she took home 3rd in kata and
3rd in kumite. Her gutsy performance seemed to inspire life back
life to the boys who had yet to compete.
After another energy draining and mentally taxing hour-long wait
that included a “the tournament cancelled due to flooding”
announcement, quickly followed lots of protesting and then a “hurry
up and finish” announcement, the boys got to compete.
Men’s Beginner (18-34 years, White, Yellow, Orange)
In an extremely tough division, Chris Briseno led the way in the
kata competition coming 2nd, followed by Joseph Picsh 3rd. Jamison
Edwards scored top marks amongst the white belts, after only fully
learning his kata 4 classes ago. In kumite, each drew extremely
tough matches, but all fought with a lot of heart and never backed
down or gave up at any point.
Men’s Intermediate (18-34 years, Green, Purple, Blue)
Another tough division but still more awards. In kata, Dane Atkinson
finished 3rd and Ted Kilcommons 4th. In kumite, both Dane and Ted
truly put on a display of fantastic martial arts, both in ability
and sportsmanship. After handling some adversity in the their early
fights, they found themselves where they often meet on Tuesday’s
and Thursday’s. Face to face in the ring. Except this time
it was for 1st and 2nd place. A back and forward match brought them
to 4-4 with the next point for the winner. In what only can be described
as a photo finish, Dane landed a backfist one milli-second before
Ted’s landed. The result, Dane 1st, Ted 2nd in kumite. I believe
there was a standing ovation at this point, at least by all Eng
Karate supporters.
At the end of the tournament a number of black belts expressed
to me how impressed they were not only with our performance, but
in our sportsmanship, as well. I can think of no better compliment
I’d like to receive. You truly exemplified true martial art
spirit both in and out of the ring. Congratulations to all the karate
kats who competed!
