SENSEI CHRIS ENG

As far back as I can remember I know that I have always loved martial arts. From every martial arts flick I saw as a child to dressing up like a ninja 5 Halloweens in a row, clearly I was obsessed. I started karate when I was 10 years old, and I must admit that it was not what I thought it would be. I loved the workout, the perfection of each move and the grace and power that each kata brought, but I dreaded the fighting. I was the smallest kid in class and I was afraid of getting hit. It is safe to say that these two characteristics did not help my sparring.

At that time, Sensei John Liberty was taking over our club. He changed the style and attitude of the club and believed in me so much it made me believe in myself. Soon I was sparring without fear, not only in the club but at tournaments as well. Although I was still small, Sensei John and karate had given me the self-confidence to believe that I could overcome my obstacles. I was proud to become the first student in our club to ever receive a Jr. Black Belt. When I turned 16, I was awarded my Black Belt and thus began a new chapter in my life.

In 2000 I moved to New York City, and opened up Eng's Karate. I teach karate because I love it. I want my students to have that feeling and I want to honour those who have taught me. By teaching I feel I am accomplishing that.

What I have in my life I owe to martial arts. It has given me the confidence and ability to overcome all obstacles that I encounter and to achieve the goals that I want. I hope and strive to give my students that same ability.
