THE ENG KARATE WAY In order for students of Eng Karate to strive to be better, each are expected to do their best to uphold and exemplify the club principles. These are the principles that I followed while training with Sensei John Liberty and ones that I wish to continue in my own club. Attendance: Classes are currently only twice per week. Although we are all busy from time to time, full attendence is recommended. Frequent absences slow down your rate of learning and increase the time between belts. Work Ethic: Your best effort is always expected during class. Workouts should be done at full intensity to not only improve yourself but to provide energy to your peers. Club members should never say, “I can’t”, but rather, “I’ll try”. Respect: Respect must be demonstrated at all times. Black Belt instructors should be called “Sensei” and must be spoken to in a respectful tone. BELT REQUIREMENTS KATAS White Belt - 24 basic moves, Pinan Shodan
Yellow Belt - Pinan Nidan
Orange Belt - Pinan Sandan
Green Belt - Pinan Yodan
Blue Belt - Pinan Godan, Nai Hanchi
Brown Belt - Ku Shanku, 1 other Black Belt kata
Black Belt - Wanshu, Bassai Dai, Seishan, Chinto, Kanku Sho KUMITE Students should show an understanding of what they have learned from performing their katas and techniques. At each level there should be a growth both metally and physically which should show itself during sparring. Students must show the spirit and willingness to enter into combat with another opponent regardless of that person’s rank. Students must demonstrate speed, power and control over their emotions and contact, while sparring. TEACHING As each student moves up they will be given a chance to teach those students that are lower belts. Students should strive to better all others in the class.
